KUCHING, April 5: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos will take over leadership of the Serian District Council in the latest round of appointments, with the Sarawak Cabinet finalising the list of new councillors for the State’s 24 local authorities.

Deputy Minister for Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang revealed that councillors who have served for nine years will not be reappointed, though this rule does not apply to council chairmen.

‘In the latest appointments, the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council will see a new chairman, while the current chairman, Dato Peter Minos, transitions to lead the Serian District Council.

“Meanwhile, mayors and chairpersons, including those from the Limbang District Council and Miri City Council (Mayor Adam Yii), will be reappointed for a one-year term, despite having served beyond the nine-year limit,” he explained when contacted by DayakDaily.

As for the Sarikei District Council, current chairperson Wong Zee Yeng has opted not to extend her tenure, resulting in the appointment of a new chairperson, he added.

Regarding the new councillor appointments, Tiang highlighted that the list is now pending approval from Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

“Once the Governor grants approval, the new appointments will be formalised. We will then finalise the date for the swearing-in ceremony,” he stated.

Tiang, who is also the Pelawan assemblyman, confirmed that council chairpersons and their deputies who have not yet served for nine years will be retained.

“For all other new appointments, the term will span three years, from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2028,” he added. — DayakDaily
