KUCHING, May 24: PETRONAS has unveiled its latest film titled “Pesan Inik” (Grandmother’s Advice), in conjunction with Gawai Dayak celebrations.

The film tells the story of a grandmother’s five pearls of wisdom, which serves as tenets of the Iban community and a constant reminder for the younger generation to uphold the “adat” (custom and tradition) alongside moral values.

Taking a unique approach, PETRONAS showcases the Iban folk poetry known as ‘Leka Main’, presented entirely in the Iban language.

It captures the vibrant celebrations of the Hari Gawai festivities within a modern longhouse setting at Rumah Panjang Thomas Sigat in Saratok, Sarawak.

Directed by acclaimed director Faizul Jais, the film also highlights the ‘belikan’ or boat lute, a traditional Iban music instrument on the verge of extinction, along with traditional game of ‘batak lampung’, commonly played during festive gatherings.

Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh praised the webfilm for capturing the essence of Gawai festivities, weaving a narrative that resonates deeply with every Sarawakian, especially the Dayak community.

“It reflects our communal life, Sarawakian values, and aspirations. It is a timely reminder that we are stronger together, and that our cultural diversity is our greatest strength.

“Our ancestors have left us with such rich legacy that we must cherish and preserve. The traditions and customs they passed down are a source of inspiration and guidance, and they continue to shape our collective identity,” he said when officiating the exclusive preview of the PETRONAS Gawai Film 2024 titled ‘Pesan Inik’ at Cove 55, Santubong here tonight.

‘Pesan Inik’ can be viewed on PETRONAS’ official YouTube channel and Facebook pages.
