KUCHING, Dec 3: The RM8.5 million Permanent Disaster Relocation Centre (PPKB) at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Beradek Padawan is expected to be completed by March 2026, providing dedicated evacuation facilities for communities in flood-prone areas.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the centre is part of Sarawak’s proactive measures ahead of the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon, which began on November 13 and is expected to last until March 2026. The monsoon may trigger flooding in several parts of the State.
“All Divisional Disaster Management Committees have been placed on full alert and supporting assets are on standby to ensure timely response during emergencies,” he said during his ministerial winding up speech at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
Uggah reminded the public to remain vigilant, monitor weather advisories from the Malaysian Meteorological Department, and follow instructions from relevant authorities, noting that prompt action can save lives.
The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) has approved two permanent PPKBs in Sarawak. Besides SK Beradek, a second centre in Long Busang, Kapit, costing RM9 million, is scheduled to begin construction in January 2026.
He said the PPKBs will provide safe, purpose-built evacuation facilities, enhancing community resilience and ensuring that residents in high-risk areas have access to reliable shelter during floods. —DayakDaily
