KUCHING, Oct 7: A pensioner in his early 60s lost RM540,000 to a non-existent online investment scam he came across on Facebook.
In a media statement, Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata said the victim came across the Facebook advertisement for the fake investment scheme Pentheon Venture in mid-June this year.
The victim then made contact with an unknown individual who offered the scheme and later made further contact via WhatsApp.
“The victim conducted 24 transactions to nine different bank accounts from mid-June to early September this year, totalling about RM540,000.
“The victim only realised that he was cheated when the suspect could no longer be contacted, and he still did not receive any profit returns from the investment,” he said in a statement today.
Mancha further reminded members of the public to be cautious and not fall prey to online investment schemes that promise high returns in a short amount of time. — DayakDaily
