KUCHING, May 7: Violet Yong (DAP-Pending) will willing to be an intern for the Tourism Ministry following her acceptance of Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah’s challenge to be one for six months.

Abdul Karim extended his challenge towards Yong during his winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.

“I am happy that Abdul Karim, the minister of tourism, has offered an internship for me at this ministry of tourism for six months.

“I hope he is sincere about this offer, and I will take it up. I will be very much happy because it is an opportunity for me to learn, an opportunity for me to engage with the ministry so that we can share our input, our knowledge, see how we can improve our state tourism,” said Yong on the sidelines of DUN after Abdul Karim’s speech.

In response, Abdul Karim said he was glad that Yong took up the challenge.

“I would be very pleased to have her as an intern in my Ministry and our Agencies.

“I am sure she will find it interesting and knows what are the programmess that are in place.

“I will talk to her personally on this matter,” Abdul Karim told DayakDaily.

Meanwhile, Yong said if she could serve as an intern, she would prefer to be stationed in Kuching as Kuching is the first port of call for international flights.

“If you ask which area I would concentrate, I prefer Kuching area. Why I said so is because, in my speech, I touched on the sustainability of direct flights.

“And Kuching International Airport (KIA) is the place where normally flights will land and, normally, the minister will fight for Kuching-Macau, Kuching-Hong Kong, Kuching-China flights.

“And I hope with this opportunity given, we can come together with one heart and see how to improve our tourism industry in Sarawak,” said Yong.

Yang promised to be good and will try her best to work together to learn and exchange ideas with those in the ministry.

“Abdul Karim said if you come to my ministry, you don’t be naughty. I promise him I will not be naughty. I will try my best to cooperate and learn and exchange valuable knowledge and give inputs as and when necessary,” assured Yong. — DayakDaily
