KUCHING, March 5: The Sarawak government has officially gazetted Pendam and Sundar in the Limbang Division as new rice bowl areas, reinforcing the State’s efforts to ensure food security in northern Sarawak.

Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, said Pendam covers around 809 hectares, while Sundar spans 300 hectares.

“Both areas are State-owned lands allocated specifically for rice cultivation as part of our strategic planning in the agri-food sector,” he said during the Badudun Ramadan Programme at Masjid Darul Muttaqin in Kampung Gadong, Limbang, as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

Dr Abdul Rahman added that the project is expected to boost the local economy by increasing commercial farming, strengthening the food supply chain, and creating more job opportunities for residents.

On another note, he expressed hope that the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge Project will be completed this year to provide locals with smoother connectivity, reducing dependence on ferries, boats, or longer alternative routes. – DayakDaily
