KUCHING, Nov 24: Why is it so difficult for both the Federal and Sarawak governments to build a technical college in Kapit?
This is the question raised by Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang (GPS-PRS) today when debating on the Sarawak Budget 2024 at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, which is in session from Nov 20 to 29.
He pointed out that Kapit Division which came into being in 1973 is made up of four districts namely Song, Belaga, Kapit and Bukit Mabong.
“Kapit doesn’t have any technical college or any training institute, let alone a university for that matter. Only Pusat Giat Mara.
“Iban said — ‘lindong amat Kapit’ (Kapit has been overshadowed). Why (is it) so difficult for both the Federal and Sarawak government to build (a) technical college in Kapit?” questioned Nyabong.
At the same time, he pointed out that several schools in Pelagus are in dire need of assistance.
He said the people of Pelagus have been waiting patiently for the Federal government to assist “but not much has come in the last few years”.
He thus appealed to the Sarawak government for assistance in view that several schools truly need urgent attention.
This includes SMK Selirik, which needs a new boarding quarter as the existing one has been declared unsafe to occupy, SK Rantau Panjai of Sungai Bena which needs two units of teachers’ quarter and a dining hall and SMK Kapit which needs additional classrooms following an increase in student intake year after year. — DayakDaily
