KUCHING, Mar 23: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) said it has formally submitted a draft motion to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg urging Sarawak members of Parliament (MPs) to repeal the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA74) but has yet to receive any response or action.
In a statement, the party claimed that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) approach to addressing critical issues such as oil and gas (O&G) rights—including resorting to federal courts—was a strategy which ‘leaves Sarawak vulnerable to manipulation and empty promises from the federal leadership’.
The party also expressed concern over recent calls by political leaders within the GPS government for Sarawakians to ‘rally behind’ the State administration, which they claimed had drawn mixed reactions.
“Sarawakians expect a strong, unequivocal stance. If the federal government fails to repeal the Petroleum Development Act 1974, the Territorial Seas Act, and the Continental Shelf Act within a reasonable time frame, the GPS government must be prepared to present the people of Sarawak with a clear and democratic choice: remain tied to Malaya under unjust terms or assert Sarawak’s sovereignty and independence,” it said.
The party further called upon the GPS government to take decisive, uncompromising action to restore the State’s rights over its resources. — DayakDaily
