KUCHING, Feb 3: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Sarawak Youth has called on critics not to silence Sarawak leaders who are defending the State’s rights, voicing frustration and apprehension over ongoing challenges to Sarawak’s autonomy.

The statement comes in response to Perak Democratic Action Party (DAP) vice-chairman Dr Abdul Aziz Bari, who recently called for the resignation of PBB secretary-general and Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi from the federal cabinet following Nanta’s use of the term “divorce” from Malaysia.

PBB Sarawak Youth strongly condemned Abdul Aziz’s remarks, describing them as an attempt to ridicule a Sarawakian leader raising legitimate concerns over the State’s rights.

The youth wing also criticised certain media outlets for referring to Abdul Aziz merely as a “constitutional law expert” while concealing his political affiliation with the DAP, calling the practice deceptive and dishonest.

“There is nothing constitutional, lawful, or expert in the statements made by the Perak DAP vice-chairman. It is purely political in nature and intent,” the statement read.

It questioned whether Abdul Aziz himself was bound by party responsibility to ignore or dilute Sarawak rights, suggesting he should refrain from making dismissive comments.

“If that is the case, he is the one who should keep sentiments to himself,” PBB Youth added.

The youth wing defended Nanta’s remarks as a reflection of Sarawak’s frustration with attempts by certain quarters in Peninsular Malaysia to challenge the State’s rights. They said Abdul Aziz’s statement exemplified the cause of such disenchantment.

PBB Sarawak Youth urged dessenters and armchair experts to study Sarawak’s legal claims to its resources before issuing statements or drawing conclusions.

“Our claims, struggles, and trepidations are based on legal principles and facts, anchored in existing laws,” the statement affirmed.

The youth wing reiterated its unwavering support for Nanta and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in defending Sarawak’s rights in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report 1962, and both the Federal and Sarawak Constitutions. — DayakDaily
