KUCHING, Dec 17: Sarawak will inject RM500 million to procure critical medical equipment, even as the federal government allocates RM1 billion for the Sarawak Cancer Centre construction, a move Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said is driven by urgency and deep concern for patients.
He said the Sarawak government stepped in because cancer patients in the State cannot afford to wait while funding approvals and administrative processes are finalised.
“Cancer patients cannot wait. That is why Sarawak is prepared to bear the cost of the equipment first,” he told reporters after the Sarawak Budget Conference 2026 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Abang Johari explained that the RM1.5 billion project comprises RM1 billion in federal funding for hospital development, while Sarawak will provide RM500 million to ensure the facility is fully equipped and can be made operational as soon as possible.
He added that the federal government had requested Sarawak to take on the equipment component, a request the State agreed to in the interest of public health.
“With cancer cases increasing, we must respond quickly. Even if Sarawak has to fund it at the initial stage, we are willing to do so to help our people,” he said.
According to Abang Johari, an arrangement is in place for the federal government to reimburse its portion in stages over a period to be determined, as Sarawak will advance the funds upfront.
He stressed that the decision underscores the Sarawak government’s prioritisation of healthcare and its commitment to ensuring timely access to cancer treatment for Sarawakians.
“As long as we have the means, we will continue to help. I ask for prayers that Sarawak’s resources continue to grow so we can keep serving the people,” he added. — DayakDaily
