KUCHING, Jan 1: The passing of distinguished Sarawak-born economist and renowned academic Dato’ Dr Madeline Berma has been described as a great loss not only to Sarawak but also to the nation, in recognition of her immense contributions to development economics and advocacy for marginalised communities.
Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said her death marked the loss of a highly dedicated figure whose work had helped shape important public policies at both State and national levels.
Madeline, 67, passed away at her residence in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, on Dec 30.
Earlier today, Wan Junaidi, together with his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, paid their last respects to the late academic at her family residence in Kampung Siol Kandis, Petra Jaya.
Their arrival was met with deep sorrow by her immediate family members.
“Sarawak had lost a precious gem whose dedication, intellect and commitment to public service would be long remembered,” he said in a media release.
During the visit, Wan Junaidi and Fauziah also took time to personally convey their condolences to the bereaved family.
The Governor shared that he was acquainted with the late Madeline’s father, whom he knew from their time serving together in the police department in earlier years.
He also prayed that the entire family of the late Dato’ Dr Madeline would be granted strength, fortitude and peace during this difficult period. — DayakDaily
