Part-time driver jailed 1 year 10 months to conveyance of smuggling migrants

KUCHING, Feb 9: High Court here sentenced a part-time driver to a jail term of 1 year and 10 months for involvement in the conveyance of smuggling migrants.

Roim Langge pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.

High Court Judicial Commissioner Alexander Siew How Wai accepted his guilty plea and sentenced him to 1 year and 10 months of imprisonment, with effect from the date of arrest.

Justice Alexander also ordered the vehicle, Toyota Hiace with registration number QAM 1083 belonging to one Bester Endil to be forfeited to the Government of Sarawak.

Roim was found involved in the offence of conveyance of smuggling eight Indonesian migrants, in front of RHB Bank, Jalan Black Smith, in Lundu, at about 8am on December 2, 2020.

According to the brief facts of the case, the said migrants found in the vehicle had engaged their agent to arrange their return to Indonesia via an illegal route.

The agent dealt with a person called Bester Endil to arrange for their transportation. The accused worked as a part-time driver with Bester Endil who instructed the accused to convey the said migrants from Kuching City Mall and drop them somewhere near ICQS Biawak for them to return to Indonesia.

The accused was offered RM100 for the said trip.

DPP Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi prosecuted while the accused was not represented by a counsel. — DayakDaily
