MIRI, August 30: Motorists here will have to pay more for parking effective this Sept 1, unless they still have the old parking coupons.
The price hike is due to the six per cent service tax, which comes into effect this Saturday, said Miri City Council (MCC) Mayor Adam Yii.
In announcing this at a press conference here today, Yii said according to the Service Tax Act 2018, parking services were subjected to the six per cent service tax.
“All parking coupons will be on sale with six per cent tax. For instance, a book containing 10 parking coupons would cost RM4 plus RM0.25 (six per cent service tax), meaning RM4.25, beginning Sept 1,” he said.
“All parking coupons purchased before Sept 1 are still valid.”
On a call by Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon for MCC to absorb the tax, Yii replied, “It is not within the council’s authority (to do so). The tax is applicable throughout Malaysia.”
Also present at the press conference was Yii’s deputy, Julaihi Mohamad — DayakDaily
