KUCHING, Dec 7: Parents must not abdicate their responsibility in guiding and educating their children, even if they are sent to boarding schools, says Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

In a Facebook post, Tiong, who is the Malaysian Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture as well as Bintulu MP, said he attended SMK Sibu Jaya’s Parents-Teachers Association (PIBG) dinner recently, where he stressed the need for parents to remain actively involved in their children’s lives.

“They must visit their children regularly, take their emotional development seriously, and monitor their academic progress,” he said.

On the issue of student discipline, Tiong said teachers should communicate professionally with parents and work closely with them to guide students.

Sharing his personal experience, he said: “In the family, parents are the first teachers. When I was young, my father disciplined me with a cane, which made me reflect on my mistakes.

“If children are overly indulged without proper guidance, their journey to adulthood will be more difficult, and the police may eventually be forced to intervene in harsher ways.” – DayakDaily
