KUCHING, Dec 11: The Pan Borneo Highway is being upgraded to the highest national standard and is expected to be fully gazetted as a Grade 1 road.

Sarawak Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP Sarawak) chairman Michael Kong shared this following a meeting with JPJ Sarawak and JKR Sarawak.

“We are happy to note that from the total 26 sectors of Pan Borneo Highway (from Teluk Melano to Permyjaya, Miri), a total 17 sectors have officially been gazetted under ‘List 1’ under Weight Restriction Order!

“This means that our highway is now built to the highest standard, on par with the roads in Peninsular Malaysia. The remaining nine sectors are currently also undergoing the process of being gazetted under ‘List 1’ as well,” he said in a press statement.

“This achievement did not happen overnight. The process of upgrading and reclassifying Pan Borneo Highway has been an ongoing effort involving multiple agencies including the LPKP Sarawak, JPJ Sarawak, JKR Sarawak and Ministry of Transport Sarawak,” he added.

Kong also shared that maximum permissible gross weight limits for heavy vehicles plying this road will be revised upwards in due course that is 5-axle lorries may now carry BDM up to 45 tonnes, and 6-axle lorries up to 50 tonnes.

“This upgrade is a reflection of the improved infrastructure capacity of the Pan Borneo Highway and the Federal Government’s commitment to balancing road safety, transport efficiency, and economic needs,” he added.

Moving forward, he said, LPKP Sarawak will continue to work hand-in-hand with JKR Sarawak, JPJ Sarawak, and all relevant agencies to ensure that our transport policies remain progressive, safe, and supportive of Sarawak’s growth. – DayakDaily
