KUCHING, May 23: Firefighters from Padungan fire station were recently treated to a ‘berbuka puasa’ feast by Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.

He thanked the firefighters for taking great care of the community, not only by putting out fires to save human lives and property but also saving animals and many other ‘odd’ emergencies, while at the same time putting their lives on the line every day.

“I am incredibly grateful for the bravery and efficiency of all of the firefighters. Thank you for spending countless hours at the firehouse. Thank you for waking up at odd hours to help save a family whose house burst into flames. Thank you for using the ‘Jaws of Life’ to extract the victims from vehicle accidents and many more. Thank you for being so selfless that you do not even think twice when you run into a burning building,” he told the some 80 firefighters present.

Wearing a striking red shirt to symbolically honour the ‘heroes in red’, Dr Yii added, “You are heroes. You may not feel like you are, but I can promise you people out there including boys or girls are looking up to you. Once again, thank you for constantly running towards what others run from.”

Being a firefighter is not an easy job, Dr Yii acknowledged, adding that there are physical and emotional demands that can take a toll on them.

He also assured the state Fire and Rescue Department that if they needed help, to not hesitate to approach him.

“We are your friendly neighbourhood MP and state assembly people. Our doors are always open,” he added.
