BAU, May 15: The Sarawak government has approved an allocation of more than RM500 million for Phase 2 of the Jalan Bau Lama upgrade project, which will transform the existing single carriageway into a dual carriageway, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The dual carriageway project, which complements the Pan Borneo Highway, is being implemented in two phases—with Phase 1 currently under construction and Phase 2 to commence soon.

ā€œWhen local representatives such as Dato Henry Harry Jinep (Tasik Biru assemblyman) and Dato Lo Khere Chiang (Batu Kitang assemblyman) came to see me, they proposed upgrading the old Bau road into a dual carriageway instead of relying solely on the Pan Borneo Highway.

ā€œI did some quick calculations and said yes—Phase 2 alone will cost more than half a billion ringgit. That’s a significant amount, and I had to find the funds, but that is my responsibility as your Premier,ā€ he said when officiating Bau District’s 205th anniversary celebration and the opening of the Tasik Biru Festival 2025 and Tasik Biru Resort City, held near Tasik Biru here today.

Abang Johari said once completed, Bau will enjoy enhanced connectivity via two major access routes—the Pan Borneo Highway and the upgraded Jalan Bau Lama, which passes through Siniawan—a move that will also support tourism growth in the area.

ā€œI drove myself to Bau today because it’s been a while since I last drove. Also, the road is in great condition, so I wanted to experience it personally.

ā€œWith good infrastructure, we will surely be able to attract more visitors to drive to Bau,ā€ he added.

Earlier, Dato Henry, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine), expressed gratitude to the Premier for approving the crucial funding.

ā€œPhase 1 is currently underway, and Phase 2 will begin soon. It requires an allocation of over RM500 million, which has been approved by the Premier. Thank you, sir.

ā€œWe hope both phases can be completed within the planned timeframe,ā€ he said.
