KUCHING, July 28: Sarawak has received more than RM290,000 in funding from the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) to strengthen the development of Muay Thai, the Dewan Rakyat was told today (July 28).
According to a TVS news report, KBS deputy minister Adam Adli Abd Halim said the allocation covers tournament organisation and support for local clubs.
He revealed that RM95,000 was channelled to Kelab Muay Thai Rentap to organise the Rentap Fighting Championship VI held on July 11 and 12, while the Sarawak Muay Thai Association received RM200,000 to host the Premier Sarawak Cup.
“This is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure greater youth participation in Muay Thai and to provide opportunities for local athletes to compete at higher levels,” he said.
Adam was responding to a question from Roy Angau Gingkoi (Gabungan Parti Sarawak–Lubok Antu), who asked about KBS’ plans to enhance Muay Thai events in Malaysia to attract more youth participation.
He added that as of June 2025, KBS through the National Sports Council (MSN) has channelled over RM1.8 million in various forms of aid to Muay Thai sports bodies, clubs and associations nationwide.
Breakdown of the allocations include RM1.585 million under the Sports Body Grant, RM247,000 via the National Sports Trust Fund (KWASN), RM55,000 from the Community Sports Fund, and RM170,000 for sending athletes to international competitions such as the IFMA World Muay Thai Championship in Greece and the King’s Cup in Thailand. — DayakDaily
