KUCHING, Dec 30: More than 1,500 new teachers in Sarawak who have passed the interview process will begin service across the State by mid-January 2025.
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Sarawak Education Department (JPNS) director Omar Mahli said the Education Service Commission (SPP) has completed the interview process and the results have been given to the successful candidates.
“The candidates have received their respective results, and now the Ministry of Education (MOE) is coordinating the placements through the e-Graduan system.
“I have been informed that the placements will be completed and they are expected to start their duties across Sarawak by mid-January,” he said.
He said this after paying a courtesy call to the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, at his office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in conjunction with his appointment as the new JPNS director today.
He added that out of more than 12,000 candidates screened, 1,500 were selected—300 will be placed in secondary schools, while the rest will be in primary schools.
“This move is expected to address the problem of teacher shortages, especially in rural and remote areas, thus strengthening education in Sarawak,” added Omar.
As the new director of JPNS, Omar stressed his commitment to strengthening relations with the Sarawak government, particularly through the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD).
“We intend to establish close cooperation with the Sarawak government and related agencies more frequently through engagement sessions.
“This is important to ensure that education policies and programmes can be understood and well received by the community,” he explained.
Omar, who previously served as senior deputy director of the Daily School Management Division (BPSH) at the Ministry of Education, replaced Datu Dr Azhar Ahmad who retired in November.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak Prime Minister and the State Government for their support of JPNS’s efforts in developing the education sector in the State. — DayakDaily
