MIRI, Sept 5: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggas reminded the opposition not to mislead the people about Sections 6 and 18 of the Sarawak Land Code.

“Some people have told and misled the landowners, saying that the state governemt will take away their land ownership through Section 6, which is not true at all…please get your facts right,” he said.

Uggah said this at the Land Code (Amendment) Ordinance 2018 Forum dinner held at a hotel here earlier tonight.

Some 500 community leaders from across the northern region encompassing Bintulu, Miri, Limbang and Lawas, attended the dinner.

The forum on the Land Code (Amendment) Ordinance 2018 will be officiated at by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg tomorrow (Sept 6) at Pullman Hotel Miri here.

The forum’s objective is to help englighten community leaders and native landowners on matters pertaining to native customary rights (NCR) including on Sections 6 and 18 under the Sarawak Land Code.

Uggah added, land gazetted under Section 6 of the Land Code does not mean it is land free for grabs.

“Do not politicise the land issues.

“I hope the forum will be able to clear up your understanding on this matter (Land Code (Amendment) Ordinance 2018) and disseminate the correct facts on ‘pemakai menoa’ (territarial domain) and ‘pulau galau’ (communal reserve) so you can relay to your respective grassroots,” Uggah told those present.

He added, the people must understand and know what Sections 6 and 18 mean under the Land Code.

Until July this year, 888,767 hectares of land have been surveyed under Section 6 and 724,923 hectares gazetted as native communal reserves (for agriculture), while 34,958 hectares were surveyed under Section 18.

Land that was surveyed under Section 18 cannot be sold to non-Bumiputera, whereas if done under Section 6, it verifies the status of the NCR land as communal reserve for the landowners.

Also present at the forum dinner were State Secretary and forum organising chairman Datuk Jaul Samion, Deputy State Secretary Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, Minister of Utilities Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Assistant Minustet of Native Land Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Mulu assemblyman Datu Gerawat Gala, Baram MP Anyie Ngau and former deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang. — DayakDaily
