KUCHING, May 18: Traditional Cultural Group and Village Heritage of Opar claimed first place among the 43 contingents participating in tonight’s Bau Gawai Parade 2024, impressing spectators and judges alike with its captivating gear and props.
While most contingents adorned their members in traditional Dayak attire, Opar’s contingent stood out with a uniquely creative structure. Crafted from natural materials like bamboo and leaves, their ingeniously constructed platform atop a large pushcart and carrying traditional instruments, set Opar apart from the rest.
Among the triumphant contingents were the Malay Cultural Community in fifth place, followed by the Kampung Skio Women’s Association in fourth. Claiming third place was the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Serapi, with Singai’s Original Customary Association as the runner-up.
Amid the brilliance of every other group with each demonstrating their own uniqueness, another standout was a group of ladies donning special headgear named “burang” that was wrapped gracefully above their heads. “Burang” is a type of headgear worn by women when they go to the rice fields.
Each contingent flaunted its unique specialty throughout the entire parade that began at 5pm. Despite the lengthy 2.4km journey from Bau Civic Centre into the heart of town, spirits remained high as participants chanted enthusiastically to keep the energy flowing.
Moreover, Tasik Biru assemblyman Dato Henry Harry Jinep went above and beyond by personally greeting each contingent as they reached the halfway mark of the parade route, leading from the front and then circling back to cheer them on.
With spirits reignited and energies revitalised, everyone marched forward together, united in completing the flamboyant parade.
As the parade made its way into town, bystanders were enthralled, eagerly reaching for their phones to capture the spectacle unfolding before them. Some waved enthusiastically, celebrating the diversity on display, while shouting “Selamat Hari Gawai” (Happy Gawai) as the colourful contingents passed by. It was a magnificent display of unity amidst the vibrant diversity within Bau.
The parade concluded at 6.05pm, with everyone converging at the hawker centre, a sprawling crowd united in togetherness as all members came together.
In the midst of the crowds, a group danced joyously to the rhythm of the music. It started with four individuals, and soon five more joined in, creating a spontaneous celebration of dance and happiness, while others watched and cheered.
It was a jubilant occasion, brimming with diversity, shared experiences, and happiness, embraced not only by participants but also by bystanders. For the people of Bau, Gawai Dayak held special significance, a celebration cherished and celebrated together with the entire community, uniting hearts and spirits in joyous harmony. āDayakDaily
