KUCHING, Nov 11: A fire that gutted a 23-door longhouse in Kampung Long Loyang, Baram has claimed the life of a 30-year-old man and left a 60-year-old man with burn injuries.
According to a report by Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Lopeng), the blaze, which completely destroyed Block C of the longhouse, was first reported at 8.33pm on Sunday (Nov 9). Villagers acted quickly to contain the fire by creating a firebreak and wetting nearby blocks, preventing it from spreading further.
The deceased, Kanady Bryan, was found by police in Room 74, Block C early Monday morning (Nov 10). Another resident from the same room, 60-year-old Antohony Jangin, sustained burn injuries and was treated at Long Loyang Health Clinic.
Fire and rescue teams were unable to reach the site immediately due to slippery roads, heavy rain, darkness, and poor visibility. Operations resumed on Tuesday morning (Nov 11), with a forensic team joining investigators to assess the scene and determine the cause of the fire.
Operations Commander of BBP Lopeng, Hamdani Madon, praised villagers for their swift actions in preventing the fire from spreading to neighbouring blocks.
Investigations into the fire are ongoing. —DayakDaily
