LUNDU, Oct 8: Sarawak has yet to decide whether to build Malaysia’s first rocket launch pad onshore or offshore before it launches satellites into orbit.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he has conveyed both options to Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim after the latter decided to pick Sarawak as the site of the nation’s first rocket launch pad.
“Onshore launches might raise environmental concerns, while offshore launches would require us to design a specialised vessel to facilitate rocket launches from the sea,” he said when launching Aviation Academy at Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) Lundu here today.
Abang Johari further explained that rockets are essential for satellite launches, as satellites cannot be deployed into orbit without them.
Additionally, the rockets need to be equipped with advanced guidance systems to ensure accurate orbital insertion.
“On the other hand, the satellite launches will involve deploying a lot of mini satellites into the orbit.
“These satellites are designed to gather and transmit data, capturing detailed images of the Earth’s surface.
“For example, we can use these satellites to gather information about areas like Lundu
—assessing the type of soil, whether it is clay, hard soil, or peat,” he added.
On Sept 15, Abang Johari said Sematan in Lundu District has been identified as the satellite launch site. — DayakDaily
