KUCHING, April 8: The historic Kuching Nurses’ Quarters along Jalan Crookshank, once home to hospital staff, is set to be transformed into Anjung Kasih Juma’ani, a 124-bed facility providing free accommodation for families of patients at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), with renovations expected to be completed by June 2027.
Deputy Minister of Health Dato’ Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib visited the site on Tuesday (April 7) to inspect the building ahead of its renovation.
In a post shared on its social media, Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia stated that the initiative is part of the Sarawak government’s ongoing effort to offer more comfortable and well-organised lodging for patient families while preserving the heritage of the site.

Renovation works began in February 2026 and will provide temporary, free-of-charge accommodation to families in need, ensuring they can remain close to their loved ones during treatment.
The working visit was also attended by Deputy State Health Director (Public Health) Dr Mohammad Nazaruddin Bahari, Deputy Secretary of the Development Division of the Ministry of Health Ahmad Rizal Khalit, and officers from the Sarawak Health Department.
Previously, it was reported that the Sarawak government has allocated RM2 million for the project to restore and upgrade the old nurses’ quarters, repurposing it as a vital support facility while maintaining its status as a historical landmark.
The project received approval following discussions to address longstanding issues surrounding the site.
On March 26, Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri noted that construction will be managed by the relevant authorities, with the National Welfare Foundation assisting in providing internal facilities.
Plans are also underway for the federal government to expand Anjung Kasih to rural areas in Sarawak, ensuring families across the State have access to comfortable accommodation during medical treatment. — DayakDaily
