KUCHING, Nov 8: Work on the upgrade of Old Bau Road into a dual carriageway is expected to begin in 2028, with the first phase from Bau to Keranji estimated to cost about RM500 million.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said the project would be implemented in three phases, beginning with the stretch from Bau to Keranji, followed by Keranji to the Stephen Yong Road junction.

The third phase would cover the stretch from 7th Mile to Bumbok.

He said the Bau-to-Stephen Yong sections would be prioritised to provide an alternative route for motorists when construction works begin on the 7th Mile-to-Batu Kitang stretch, which could require road closures due to affected utilities and services.

“There is heavy traffic along that stretch so the Bau-to-Stephen Yong road must therefore be completed first before work begins on the 7th Mile-to-Batu Kitang stretch.

“When work on the 7th Mile-to-Batu Kitang stretch begins, many services will be affected and the road may have to be closed. With the Bau-to-Stephen Yong road completed, motorists will have an alternative route, ensuring that traffic is not severely disrupted,” he explained to reporters when met after the closing ceremony of Telaga Air Festival here, today.

Lo further said the first phase was still at the design stage, with the design now in its final stages. It has yet to go out for tender.

He was unable to confirm the exact construction start date but expected work to begin sometime in 2027.

Lo said consultants had also been appointed for the third phase, indicating that planning for the overall project was already underway.

He estimated that each phase would cost about RM500 million, requiring the project to be implemented in stages due to funding constraints.

Lo said the project was fully funded by the Sarawak government and described it as a mega project, crediting Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s financial management for enabling Sarawak to undertake major infrastructure projects.

“This is a State project, and that is why we need a lot of money. We are very fortunate and blessed to have a Premier who knows how to manage the State’s finances so well, how to source funds and how to spend them.

“Building roads and bridges, as well as providing free education, all contribute to the wellbeing of Sarawak’s economy,” he added. — DayakDaily
