Oil palm planter detained for illegal possession of weapon after accidentally shooting himself

JULAU, Jan 30: An oil palm planter who accidentally shot himself and was later discharged from Sarikei Hospital has been detained.

Julau district police chief DSP Andam Sulin said the man was arrested for investigation under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possessing weapons or ammunition without a valid license or permit.

“If convicted, he can be sentenced to imprisonment of not more than seven years or a fine of not less than RM10,000 or both,” he added.


He said the 31-year-old suspect shot himself at his home in Pakan at 2.30pm on Jan 16.

“He was referred to Sarikei Hospital on the same day for treatment of serious injuries in his left thigh and a fractured hip bone,” said DSP Andam today.

Following an inspection at the suspect’s residence, the police found and seized a shotgun barrel and also a black iron pipe in the form of a rifle barrel as well as materials containing bullet casings believed to be have been used during the incident. — DayakDaily
