SARIKEI, Oct 2: Nyelong By-Pass will be upgraded to a four-lane, two-way road to increase traffic capacity, alongside the construction of a new road connecting Nyelong By-Pass to Kwong Ming Minah to improve traffic flow in the town.
In a TVS news report, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said both projects were important in providing smoother alternative routes amid the increase in the number of vehicles, particularly along Jalan Repok.
He said the Nyelong By-Pass upgrading project involved a 3.6-kilometre stretch, which would be upgraded from a two-lane, one-way road under the Public Works Department (JKR) R3 standard to a four-lane, two-way road under the JKR U5 standard.
“The RM86 million project is being implemented by the Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD), with JKR as the implementing agency.
“The increased road capacity is expected to facilitate travel for road users from surrounding areas to Sarikei town centre, as well as the route towards Tanjung Manis,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the project at Jalan Alamanda here today.
Meanwhile, Huang said a new road connecting Nyelong By-Pass to Kwong Ming Minah, spanning approximately two kilometres with a 25-metre road reserve, would also be constructed to help reduce congestion, particularly near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tinggi Sarikei during peak hours.
The RM12 million project, implemented under the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA), would complement the existing road network while improving connectivity between areas and supporting local economic activities.
In a related development, RM5.32 million in compensation has been paid to landowners, involving 28 of the 29 titled land parcels required for the land acquisition process for the project. — DayakDaily
