KUCHING, Sept 1: Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) is the third largest oil and gas company in Malaysia after Petronas and Shell despite being a business entity which was only established in 2017.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg commended Petros for playing its role effectively.
“Petros now is the third largest oil company in Malaysia after Petronas and Shell. And Petros will play its role in the new economy for the future of Sarawak and will definitely bring returns to the State,” said Abang Johari at the press conference after chairing the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Supreme Council meeting at the party’s headquarters at Jalan Bako.
He announced that Petros will be the entity to manage carbon trading. To him, carbon is an asset of Sarawak where any economic benefits out of its trading must benefit Sarawak and its people.
“And if the carbon is to be stored in Sarawak’s waters, it means Sarawak’s shores and under our land code, it belongs to Sarawak,” said Abang Johari, explaining that such a claim is stipulated and safeguarded by the law.
PBB members will be briefed on this new initiative, and the extra income generated by carbon trading will be used to raise the household income of Sarawakians despite the fact Sarawak has been recognised as a developed economy according to the world bank standard.
Apart from that, all income, including that from carbon trading will also be used to raise the income of rural residents through the provision of infrastructure, electricity and water supply and internet connectivity which he said is an essential prequisite in carbon production and trading. — DayakDaily
