KUCHING, Feb 24: After a long day of fasting, do you have the appetite to tackle siput sedut (mud creeper)? This rare local snail is the highlight of a Ramadan buffet in Kuching, offering diners a playful challenge.

The charm is in the way it’s eaten — no fork, no spoon. Pick up the tiny snail, use both hands like the locals, place the pointed end to your lips, and give it a confident slurp. With a little practice, the meat slides out easily.

It might feel awkward at first, but once the diners get the hang of it, it can be addictive.

The dish is part of the Borneo Cultures Museum Restaurant’s Ramadan buffet, which runs from Feb 23 to Mar 19.

Early bird seats are priced at RM78 nett, limited to 30 per day. The regular price is RM98 nett, while walk-ins pay RM118 nett. Children aged 6–12 are charged RM48 nett, and those under six eat free.

Sarawak Museum Director Nancy Jolhi said this marks the third year of the month-long Ramadan buffet.

“Based on feedback from our regular customers in previous years, they were very satisfied with the buffet.

“Last year, the restaurant was fully booked throughout Ramadan, so we hope diners will make their reservations early this year,” she said during a special iftar preview yesterday (Feb 23).

Restaurant staff Muhd Nur Affif Adha Amran said the buffet offers around 10–12 main dishes each evening, with live stations serving kambing golek, pasta, Sarawak laksa, and ABC or cendol.

“Normally, we don’t open at night, but during Ramadan we stay open after sunset.

“This will encourage visitors to come and visit the Museum and after that, they can break their fast at the restaurant,” he said.
