SIBU, Nov 16: A woman’s hope of happily-ever-after with a Korean man ended on a sad note when she lost RM86,841 to a love scam.
Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said on November 14, they received a report from a local woman, 30, who claimed that she was scammed out of RM86,841.
“The victim’s ordeal started when she got acquainted with a Korean man through the Tinder dating application,” he said.
On June 19, the suspect promised to meet the victim, who is a private employee, after his visa application was approved.
“Following that, the suspect told her that he had made several deliveries of goods to her. However, she was told that the goods were detained by Indonesian customs before coming to Malaysia,” continued ACP Zulkipli.
On July 25, the victim was contacted by an individual who impersonated a customs officer who asked her to make several payments to obtain a clearance certificate so that the goods could be sent to Malaysia.
“The woman made 25 transactions totalling RM86,841 into eight local accounts. The victim then grew suspicious when she was told to make more payments,” said Zulkipli.
She then realised that she had been scammed when the suspect could no longer be contacted.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
