KUCHING, May 25: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) has called on airlines to play their role in giving back to society and supporting social cohesion by reducing airfares for the upcoming festive season so that more Sarawakians can return home to celebrate with their loved ones.
In a statement, PBK president Voon Lee Shan argued that many families in Sarawak are currently unable to afford the high cost of travel, and for communities in the interior and for those working far from home, the barrier of expensive airfares makes holiday reunions impossible.
Calling it a social and cultural concern, as family gatherings and community celebrations are central to society, he called on national and regional carriers to consider temporary fare reductions, special discounts, or targeted concessionary fares for Sarawakians travelling home during the season.
In addition, he said that affordable travel could also strengthen local economies in Sarawak as returning family members spend on transport, food, accommodation, and local businesses.
“PBK stands ready to work with airlines, relevant government agencies, and community groups to explore practical measures, such as limited-time promotional fares, flexible booking options, or partnerships that subsidise travel for low-income families.
“We ask the public and policymakers to support this initiative so that no Sarawakian is left behind from celebrating with family because of cost.” — DayakDaily
