KUCHING, Oct 8: The Education Service Commission (SPP) has no reason to deny the qualifications of locals to fill teacher vacancies throughout Sarawak, says the Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS).
In a statement issued yesterday (Oct 7), the union said that locals are just as qualified as other candidates from Peninsular Malaysia.
“They (locals) only need to be given courses related to critical options while waiting for placement in schools,” they said.
According to the statement, the term ‘special recruitment of Sarawak teachers’ is clearly meant to focus on Sarawakians.
The union said open recruitment would cause a lot of problems.
“Problems we expect, such as non-reporting and placement appeals within each state, will definitely exist.
“When this happens, the problem of the teacher shortage in Sarawak will not be solved,” said KGBS.
Meanwhile, KGBS hopes that the Sarawak government will continue to push the federal government to give Sarawak autonomy in managing the State’s education affairs.
Earlier, Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak Dato Sri Roland Sagah expressed his disappointment after the SPP seemed to have gone back on its promise to reserve vacancies under a special teacher’s recruitment programme for Sarawak exclusively for Sarawakians. — DayakDaily
