MIRI, Nov 21: Miri City Council (MCC) is turning up the pressure on supermarkets and shoppers alike as it relaunches its ‘No Plastic Bag’ campaign to tackle worsening single-use plastic pollution.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Miri Mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang said the initiative needs consistent enforcement from retailers and stronger public commitment if Miri is to stay “clean, green and sustainable.”

“Our aim isn’t to collect fees—it’s to protect the city,” he said after chairing MCC’s November 2025 full council meeting at Miri City Hall today.

Yii warned that single-use plastics continue to choke drains, dirty public spaces and harm marine life, underscoring the need for firmer, long-term action.

He also clarified that MCC has not received any share of the 20-sen plastic bag charge since 2018, as the fee is now entirely set and managed by supermarkets.

He urged the public to carry reusable bags and support the city’s drive toward a plastic-free, more sustainable future. – DayakDaily
