KUCHING, Jan 9: The reinstatement of the Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR) and Form Three Assessment (PT3) is both urgent and necessary, with no further study required, said Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education and Innovation Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

Dr Annuar made the remarks on his social media today, highlighting the positive impact observed after just one year of Sarawak implementing the Sarawak Dual Language Programme Assessment (UP-DLP).

“Teachers have become more serious in ensuring students achieve good results, while parents are encouraging their children to study diligently from primary school.

“Students are motivated to work hard due to concerns about not securing placements in Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSIS). Headmasters, too, are taking the initiative seriously, fearing their schools may lag behind,” he said.

His comments follow the announcement that the Ministry of Education (MoE) will conduct an immediate study on the need to reinstate UPSR and PT3, amid public debate over the exams’ abolishment.

Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek said the National Education Advisory Council had been tasked to carry out the review, acknowledging the controversy that arose when the exams were scrapped.

She added that a decision would be made once the council completes the study and submits its findings and recommendations.

UPSR, traditionally taken by Primary 6 students, was abolished in 2021, while PT3, taken by Form 3 students, was officially cancelled in 2022. The exams have long been viewed as key benchmarks for student academic achievement in Malaysia. — DayakDaily
