KUCHING, Feb 10: Smiles fill Kota Sentosa as families receive food baskets to celebrate Chinese New Year (CNY) with dignity and peace of mind.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the initiative aims to ensure no family is left behind during the festive season, when reunion dinners are especially important.

“It is my pleasure to be here with all of you as we prepare to welcome Chinese New Year. It is a time for families to gather, sit around the table, and share a reunion dinner together.

“However, for some families, this festive season is not easy. Worries about daily needs, especially food, can take away the joy of the New Year,” he said during handover of the food basket programme at Farley today.

Yap said the initiative ensures no family goes hungry and that everyone can enjoy a proper reunion dinner, while also reminding the community of the importance of caring for one another.

“The boxes are all for the dinner—vegetables, meat, everything for a proper Chinese New Year meal. There is no rice or cooking oil included,” he added.

Out of 100 identified recipients, 93 received assistance at the event, with the remainder scheduled for house-to-house distribution.

“After this, we will go to Stampin Resettlement Scheme and deliver some directly to homes. I thank Penghulu Lai Boon Khee and his team, who identify recipients based on their knowledge of the community. They know which families need this assistance, and the programme is strictly for Kota Sentosa residents,” he said.

He hoped that Sarawakians returning home for the festive season would prioritise safety and health.

“I hope the entire Kuching community has a fantastic Chinese New Year next week. This is something we should all treasure. For those not going home, remember to call your parents on reunion dinner day,” he said. — DayakDaily
