KUCHING, April 5: Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim hinted today that a general election will not be held in the near term, urging all stakeholders to work together as Malaysia navigates rising energy costs and global uncertainties.
He urged Malaysians to face the economic reality with pragmatism, pointing out that even oil-producing nations are raising fuel prices, while Malaysia manages to maintain subsidised petrol at RM1.99 per litre — a rate only rivalled by Brunei Darussalam.
“This is not about political rivalries. There will be no general election in the next couple of months.
“Be patient — when the time comes, we will face the election. But for now, enough of politics! Focus on the work at hand. Stand up — let’s save our country!” he said when speaking at the Madani Rakyat Perak 2026 Programme in Perak yesterday (April 4). His remarks were taken from the verbatim speech text released by his office.
Malaysia’s current Parliament (15th Parliament) was sworn in on December 19, 2022. Under the Federal Constitution, a parliamentary term lasts five years from the first sitting, meaning the next general election must be held by February 2028 at the latest.
However, the Prime Minister can advise the King to dissolve Parliament earlier, which is why there is often speculation about early elections. – DayakDaily
