KUCHING, Nov 22: Sarawak Patriot Association (SPA) is organising a seminar to create greater awareness among Sarawakians on the state’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
The event will be held at the Sarawak Islamic Information Center at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee here this Dec 7, from 7 pm-10pm.
Organising chairwoman Brenda Yong said SPA had invited two local experts to talk about this issue. They are State Legal Advisor Dato Sri JC Fong and former Assistant Minister Datuk David Teng Lung Chi. Fong will dwell on the topic ‘Equal Status and Partnership for Sabah and Sarawak within the Federation of Malaysia’, while Teng will talk on ‘MA63: Special Positions and safeguards of Sarawak’.
Yong said there would be a Q&A session for the audience to seek clarification.
“SPA strongly believes this ‘Sarawak Rights Under MA63’ will bring forth better understanding of the position of Sarawak as well as how Sarawak can move forward from where we are,” she added.
Yong noted that in recent years, there had been many talks among the people, including students, about petroleum rights, regaining autonomy, and requesting for equal partnership in the Federation of Malaysia.
“With so many people talking, many of us get confused as to what is right and what is wrong. The bottom line of all those talks is a very simple one — Sarawakians want a better Sarawak.
“The essence of ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’ is fuming in all Anak Sarawak’s hearts; after all, why not? Sarawak is Ibu Pertiwiku,” she said.
