KUCHING, March 26: Habitat for Indigenous and Urban Program (Hidup) today handed over assistance to a family in Kampung Nyiru Gait in Jalan Puncak Borneo whose roof was blown away during a thunderstorm in November last year.
Its president, George Young Si Ricord Jr, said the assistance was presented to village security and development committee (JKKK) representative Jimmy Akeng, witnessed by a representative from ASTEEL Group, Sim Hui Ping.
“The roofs of at least a few houses in Kampung Nyiru Grait here were blown away due to heavy rain and strong winds that hit the area on Nov 25, 2022.
“However, Ranyo’s house was the most severely hit with about 15 pieces of the roof blown away, and the outer walls of her house were also damaged in the incident,” he said in a statement today.
According to Ranyo, she was resting at home when strong winds struck the village at about 1.30pm on that day following heavy rain.
She said suddenly, the roof of the bedroom upstairs was rattling before it was ripped off and blown away.
“It was a scary experience, but I am grateful all my family members escaped without injury.
“However, the incident also caused damage to the ceiling, and most of their belongings were soaked,” said Ranyo.
Failing an impasse for assistance for Ranyo from community leaders, the JKKK of Kg Nyiru Grait sought assistance from Hidup.
George immediately set in motion to collaborate with one of their corporate partners, ASTEEL Group.
ASTEEL Group is one of the biggest integrated steel mills in East Malaysia and immediately donated the requested roofing material. — DayakDaily
