KUCHING, March 12: The new Tambirat market in Asajaya is more than 90 per cent completed and is expected to start operating in May this year.

According to a press statement, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos said the market will cater for the many traders selling their products along the main road in Tambirat.

He added, while they are doing well in terms of their livelihoods, many members of the public have complained to MPKS that the traders’ operation have caused traffic congestion and endangered road safety.

“The roadside traders need to be grouped and relocated slightly off but near the roadside with lots of parking spaces.

“Hence, MPKS had to set up the market thanks to funds from Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) chaired by Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who is also the Asajaya assemblyman,” he said in a statement today.

The new market will be able to accommodate up to 100 traders.

The building has a modern design with all the necessary facilities for both wet and dry goods including local crafts and arts as well as space for public refreshment and leisure.

“The focus will be on fresh sea catch and agriculture products of which the area is famous for.

“The compound will be made nice and attractive to attract visitors and even tourists,” Minos added.

Minos also disclosed that once the new Tambirat market is completed, a new food court or market for dry goods and traditional local arts and handicrafts will be set up at Aiman Mall.

MPKS, he said, aims to give maximum opportunities to local smallholders and traders through the establishment of markets. — DayakDaily
