KUCHING, Aug 8: The new Tabuan Jaya Health Clinic at Jalan Setia Raja, which is scheduled for completion by Sept 16, 2025, is a major step forward in addressing overcrowded clinics and expanding healthcare access for the growing population in Kuching.

This was confirmed by Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii in a statement today following the recent reply from the Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in Parliament.

“This is a project that I have consistently pushed for on behalf of the people in Kuching since I was elected, and I am pleased to see that it is finally taking shape after all these years,” he said.

Once operational, the clinic is expected to provide a wide range of critical services for residents in and around the Tabuan neighbourhood, including those in nearby areas.

According to Dr Yii, the new facility will house essential healthcare services such as a pharmacy unit, outpatient and emergency treatment, diagnostic imaging, oral health and rehabilitation services, maternal and child healthcare, pathology, and other key units.

It will also be equipped with public and staff amenities to ensure a conducive environment for both patients and healthcare personnel.

“Not only will this bring better access to healthcare for the growing population in the area, it may also help to decongest overcrowded clinics such as the Tanah Puteh Health Clinic, Kota Sentosa Health Clinic, and other clinics that have long been overstretched with high patient volume,” he added.

Emphasising that healthcare is a basic right, Dr Yii vowed to continue advocating for the timely completion of the project and to work closely with the Ministry of Health and relevant agencies to ensure the clinic will be fully staffed and operational upon its opening.

“I remain committed to fighting for accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for all residents in Bandar Kuching and beyond,” he said.

The construction of the Tabuan Jaya Health Clinic (Type 2) has been delayed, despite its initial target for completion by June 2024 and commencement of operations by the end of the year. The project is expected to take 30 months to complete.

Originally approved by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) in 2016 under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) with an estimated cost of RM40 million, the project encountered setbacks when the Sarawak Tender Board called for a retender exercise in January 2020.

This was due to the expiration of the valid tender period before the agreement letter could be signed. — DayakDaily
