KUCHING, Feb 19: The completion of the new Rumah Sara longhouse in Nanga Dendang, Ulu Wak in Pakan, comprising 31 doors and fully equipped with electricity, treated water supply and a cement road leading to its front, stands as a symbol of steady rural development in Sarawak.

The milestone was marked with the traditional Mangkung Tiang ceremony officiated by Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, an important Iban cultural rite signifying gratitude and the beginning of a more prosperous life in a new longhouse.

“Congratulations to the residents of Rumah Jala, who now enjoy a 31-door longhouse fully equipped with electricity, water supply, and a cement road leading to the front of the house—a clear testament to the ongoing progress of rural infrastructure,” he said in a Facebook post recently.

Nanta, who is also Kapit assemblyman, further extended his appreciation to Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan, Baleh assemblyman Nicholas Kudi, and Political Secretary to the Minister of Works Datuk Alvin Runggah Jimbun for their presence and support.

He also congratulated Sagu Anak Unting, a local from Rumah Sara, on his appointment as regional director of the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA), expressing hope that the new longhouse would always remain peaceful, prosperous and blessed.

Touching on the wider development agenda, Nanta praised the leadership of Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg, noting that the establishment of regional development agencies such as URDA and Mid-Rajang Regional Development Agency (MiRRDA) has helped accelerate rural development since 2017.

He said the RM1.5 billion allocation to these agencies showed the government’s firm commitment to uplifting the socio-economic status of the people, including communities in Kapit. – DayakDaily
