KAPIT, Jan 10: Construction on a 7-kilometre road worth RM70 million connecting five longhouses around the Baleh, Rumah (Rh) Belaja, Nanga (Ng) Benin, Ng Pelagus, and Pelagus Resort areas is expected to be completed by April 2027.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Jambatan Baleh/Rh Belaja/Ng Benin/SK Ng Pelagus/Pelagus Resort road project was held today, which was officiated by Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi with Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang present.
In a statement today, Nanta said the project under the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA) involving two bridges was re-tendered to be implemented by a completion contractor since the original contractor’s contract had been terminated.
Nanta said although the length of the road is quite short, it faces challenges because the terrain in the area is quite challenging.
“With the completion of this project, it will complete several other projects that are also being carried out in the surrounding area, including by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, thus making it easier for the people who currently have to use logging roads because the villages here are quite remote,” he said.
The road is expected to benefit over 2,000 villagers in the surrounding areas.
Additionally, he hoped that the appointed contractor would complete the project within the specified time frame and avoid making extensions of time (EoT), thus helping to save the government’s finances.
“As the MP for Kapit and the chairman of URDA, I will also ensure that several other infrastructure and road construction projects under URDA receive the appropriate allocation to complete the road network in this area,” he said. — DayakDaily
