KUCHING, Aug 8: A new road connecting Ng Belawai–SK Nanga Terusa–Rumah Jabang in Ulu Belawai, Kapit, will not only provide safer and more comfortable travel conditions, but also serve as a catalyst for socio-economic development, improve the mobility of the people, and expand economic opportunities in Ulu Belawai and surrounding areas.

In a Facebook post, Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi officiated the opening ceremony for the road developed under the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA).

The project, which costs RM57.5 million, involved the construction of eight kilometres of main road, eight spur roads, and three new bridges across Sungai Belawai.

Nanta, who is also the Works Minister, said the road will benefit 16 longhouses and 1,633 residents, and will facilitate access to SK Nanga Terusa, which has 55 pupils.

“As URDA chairman, I would like to express my appreciation to the Sarawak Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) for his vision and leadership in driving rural development,” he said.

He also said that they are moving into the next phase through the proposed construction of the Ng Belawai Bridge and a connecting road to the Song-Kapit road, which are currently at the tender stage.

The project comprises the construction of a 2.7-kilometre road and a 470-metre bridge across Batang Rajang. Upon completion, it will complete a more comprehensive land connectivity network and reduce residents’ dependence on river routes and logging roads.

Meanwhile, in another post, Nanta also presented various forms of aid and contributions to recipients and organisations in Kapit, totalling RM476,000.

He also presented RM186,000 to various organisations, committees, and groups to support the implementation of community, education, sports, health, women’s development, and social programmes that benefit the local community. — DayakDaily
