KUCHING, Dec 6: A RM49.9 million new school block at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kanowit, aimed at improving the teaching and learning environment, has been officially handed over to the Ministry of Education (MOE).
The project, completed two months ahead of schedule on Nov 5, 2025, was carried out by the Ministry of Works (KKR) through Special Project Team 2 Sarawak (PPK2 Sarawak).

The new block comprises 18 classrooms, an administrative block, computer and science laboratories, a design and technology (RBT) workshop, a surau, two resource rooms, sports courts, and supporting facilities including waiting shelters, bicycle sheds, and a guard post.
Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the school is not just a building, but a symbol of hope and the future of the young generation in Kanowit.
“With modern and safe facilities, students will learn better, teachers can teach more effectively, and parents will have greater confidence in their children’s future,” he said at the handover ceremony today.
KKR said the upgraded block provides a safer and more conducive environment for students and staff, supporting both academic and co‑curricular activities.
Monitoring will continue during the Defect Liability Period to ensure all post-handover works are completed properly. — DayakDaily
