KUCHING, July 13: St Teresa Avila Church in Kampung Stenggang is poised to become a key centre for Catholic programmes in Bau as plans are underway to further develop its surrounding area following the completion of its new church hall.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang said the proposed upgrades would be carried out in phases, with an application for funding under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) included in this year’s development planning.
He said the proposal is expected to be considered by the GKCDA Steering Committee before funds are channelled in the third quarter of 2026.
“The priorities include improving the church compound, installing perimeter lighting and providing other supporting facilities to ensure the St Teresa Avila Church complex continues to grow into a more comprehensive and conducive centre for Catholic community activities,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the charity dinner held in conjunction with the blessing and official opening of the St Teresa Avila Church Hall in Kampung Stenggang on Sunday (July 12).
He added that Catholic Archbishop Dato Dr Simon Poh had expressed confidence that the church has the potential to become the main venue for various Catholic programmes in Bau, given its increasingly complete church and hall facilities.
Billy also said the successful upgrading of the church hall reflected the strong spirit of community cooperation and generosity, as well as close collaboration between community leaders, the church and local residents.
He said the hall would serve not only as a place for religious activities but also as a venue for faith formation, youth development, family programmes, community welfare initiatives and activities that foster unity.
“The facility will be fully utilised to host religious programmes, conferences, youth formation and community activities that strengthen the values of compassion, unity and harmony,” he said. — DayakDaily
