KUCHING, Sept 6: A new dual carriageway road connecting Serian to Gedong and extending all the way to Asajaya will soon be built, opening up the district to unprecedented growth and accessibility.

Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed the plan during the Asajaya District-level Maulidur Rasul 1447H/2025M celebration at Kampung Sebandi Ulu here today, calling it a “game changer” for the coastal district.

“The dual carriageway will start from Serian, pass through Gedong, cut across a water catchment area, and reach the Sebandi coastline.

“From there, the road will stretch to the sea and connect via bridges to two islands which will house the State’s biggest port facilities,” he said. An audio recording of his speech was later shared to DayakDaily.

Abdul Karim who is the Asajaya assemblyman, explained that one bridge will connect from Tanjung Embang and another from the Asajaya side, tying the mainland to the new port islands.

“With such a major road network, Asajaya will no longer be viewed as a kampung (village) area but will emerge as a vibrant growth centre alongside neighbouring villages like Sambir and Tambirat,” he added.

He also highlighted that a highway from Kampung Tambirat to Tanjung Apong, with a bridge extending further to Beliung and towards the upcoming Sarawak International Airport, is also in the pipeline.

Projecting that the dual carriageway and related infrastructure will materialise within the next 10 years, he urged the people of Asajaya and Samarahan to be prepared to seize the opportunities that come with development.

“When development arrives, we must ensure the local community benefits and does not get left behind. That is why I was entrusted to focus on human capital development, so our people can thrive in this wave of progress,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
