KUCHING, Nov 18: A new contractor will be appointed to restore the Kenyalang Park market ramp after the previous contractor failed to meet the specifications and standards required.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the Council has terminated the contract of the contractor responsible for the substandard ramp works.

“Proper procedures to appoint a replacement are now underway, and rectification works will begin immediately once the new contractor is confirmed.

“The quality of the ramp is not satisfactory. MBKS prioritises safe and accessible public infrastructure, and contractors must adhere strictly to the standards required,” he said in a statement following a routine inspection at the market today.

The Council also apologised to the public for any inconvenience caused.

During the site visit, the mayor and councillors also inspected fire extinguishers at market stalls to ensure the equipment is properly maintained and accessible.

Wee stressed the importance of fire preparedness in a busy market environment.

“Fire safety is crucial in public spaces. We want our hawkers to be well-prepared and confident in handling fire extinguishers and understanding basic emergency procedures,” he said.

To strengthen fire safety awareness, MBKS will be organising education sessions for hawkers in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak.

These sessions will cover the proper use of fire extinguishers, safe handling of gas cylinders and electrical equipment, and early response actions during fire emergencies.

Wee said MBKS remains committed to routine inspections and continuous improvements to safeguard public safety and enhance the overall environment within the Kuching South jurisdiction.
