MUKAH, Sept 1: A new water treatment plant with a capacity of 60 million litres per day will be built to double the capacity of the existing Basong Water Treatment Plant and meet the needs of the growing population.
Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi said that it will become the main water treatment plant for the central region of Sarawak when the Sarawak Water Supply Grid Project, which is currently in the planning stage, is implemented.
“The (existing) Basong Water Treatment Plant has a capacity of 60 million litres daily. This is important to supply treated water to the majority of the local population in Mukah Division,” he said in a statement following a visit to the plant yesterday (Aug 31).
The areas served by the plant include Mukah District, Balingian, Kuala Balingian, Dalat, Oya, and Igan.
Additionally, Julaihi said it will also provide water supply until the Kuala Serupai area is located under the Bintulu Division administration, including areas in Jalan Mukah-Selangau.
“The Sarawak government is committed to ensuring that every resident in Mukah Division has access to treated water supply.
“This commitment is demonstrated through short, medium and long-term planning, which is holistic and comprehensive in improving the water supply system in Sarawak,” he said.
He added that this would also resolve water issues through the implementation of the Sarawak Water Supply Grid System programme, Sarawak Alternative Water Supply Project (Sawas), water supply projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan as well as Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Digitalisation Programme. — DayakDaily
