KUCHING, July 5: The National Registration Department (NRD) will not compromise when it comes to uncovering corrupt practices and abuse of power among its employees.
In response to recent media reports about investigations into corruption and abuse of power involving NRD staff, its director-general Zamri Misman said the Department takes the investigation into the matter seriously.
“The Department remains committed to combating corruption at the departmental level by constantly improving the procedures for issuing identity documents as well as conducting various programmes to strengthen staff integrity to ensure that there are no avenues for irregularities and abuse of power by irresponsible parties,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has on Monday (July 3) during the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly acknowledged the ongoing investigations on some Immigration Department and NRD officers for suspected involvement in corruption and abuse of power.
Anwar also disclosed that he had also received information that payments were imposed on eligible applicants to obtain the citizenship certification, according to news report by Bernama.
This came following Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing’s alleged intervention to help a female Chinese national who encountered issues with Immigration Department officers on arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last Thursday.
Tiong further exposed alleged corrupt activities by few officials within the country’s main gateway, which triggered widespread investigation and public debate.
Meanwhile, Zamri also reminded the public that no agents or middlemen have been appointed for any business with the NRD.
“Do not trust any services offered by irresponsible parties who charge a fee.
“Information regarding application procedures and the fees charged can be found on the NRD official portal or (the public) can visit any of the 212 offices nationwide,” he advised. — DayakDaily
