KUCHING, April 8: The federal government has agreed to establish the National Disaster Management Council, with permanent members to include all Chief Ministers, Menteri Besar, and the Premier of Sarawak.
In a Bernama news, Madani government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced that the council’s formation was approved at today’s Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) appointed as its secretariat.
“This council will bring together all Chief Ministers, Menteri Besars, and the Premier of Sarawak as permanent members.
“Meetings will be held immediately following the regularly scheduled Chief Ministers and Menteri Besars meetings,” he explained during a briefing on the global energy crisis and a post-Cabinet press conference in Putrajaya today.
The Cabinet was also briefed on Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s announcement to extend the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) campaign until the end of 2027.
Fahmi noted that Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing highlighted the need to address challenges in sectors such as aviation and hospitality to mitigate the impact of the global energy crisis and ongoing conflicts in West Asia.
In addition, the Cabinet expressed condolences to the family of former Minister of Transport and Honorary Lifetime President of MCA, Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, who passed away last Saturday.
“He served as Minister of Transport for 17 years, making him one of the longest-serving and most impactful ministers in the country,” Fahmi said, adding that the Cabinet had reviewed arrangements to honour Tun Dr Ling’s family as a mark of respect. — DayakDaily
